the brief
Develop a strategic masterplan for the Isle of Wight’s community estate — assessing existing facilities, engaging with clinical stakeholders, and creating a phased route map to reshape healthcare services across the island.
what studio mode did
Working as part of the in-house NHS estates team, Studio Mode partnered with Harman Consulting to masterplan the island’s community estate. The first step was to review every building in terms of its physical condition, ownership or lease status, location, and overall suitability for purpose.
We engaged with senior clinicians to understand their preferred hub-and-spoke model and how this would align with services delivered by community teams and the acute hospital.
From there, we developed a step-by-step route map that could deliver the brief through a phased series of interrelated schemes. We presented the strategy both in tabular format and as a set of clear, graphic storyboards — including easy-to-follow, friendly cartoon visuals to help communicate the big picture.
The masterplan was well received and formally adopted as the estate strategy for community clinical services going forward. Several of the proposed projects have already been delivered, with more to follow.
anything else?
Yes — special consideration was needed around the interface between community and acute services. Given the size and population of the island, some specialist services couldn’t be replicated in every locality and therefore needed to be centralised within the masterplan.
any tricky bits?
Plenty. This was a complex puzzle to solve — involving a large number of services, buildings, requirements and stakeholders, all with different priorities and specific needs.
