the brief
Enhance the refurbished Non-Invasive Cardiology Unit with carefully selected, calming artwork — creating a welcoming, uplifting environment for both patients and staff.
what studio mode did
We were appointed as the arts co-ordinator to lead the project from inception to completion. The brief was to create a welcoming environment for the patients attending the unit and a pleasant workplace for the staff based there.
We began by working with the design team to identify suitable locations for artwork and carried out a consultation exercise with both patients and staff to agree the type and style of work. Through this process, photographic images capturing views of the local natural landscape were chosen.
We were especially aware that the main waiting area had no natural light or external windows—an environment that can sometimes contribute to increased levels of patient anxiety. Our approach was to wrap a curved section of wall near the unit entrance with a large, floor-to-ceiling print of a lush spring meadow. In the waiting area, we installed a series of landscape photographs depicting calming natural vistas to help create a more relaxing, uplifting environment.
The staff are pleased with the images, which they helped select, and patients often comment on how much they enjoy the artwork. We delivered a big impact on a very small budget.
“There is nothing worse than a blank wall. When I went to Southampton it was a joy to go there and see the art.”
any tricky bits?
Selecting suitably robust materials that can withstand the rigour of a busy clinical environment is always an interesting process. On this project, we liaised with the hospital’s Infection Prevention Team, Fire Officer, Health and Safety Officer—and also worked closely with the cleaning team to trial new materials. Our detailed testing for durability, cleanability and colour-fastness ensured we met all technical requirements.
